Stress is an unavoidable reality of modern life. We all encounter varying degrees of stress and stressors in our lives. However, when the intensity or duration of the stress we face exceeds our ability to manage that stress, something is going to break down.
Insomnia & Other Effects
Stress contributes to some predictable outcomes: insomnia, hypoglycemia, fatigue, fibromyalgia, depression, and a whole host of medical problems that most patients think they can’t do anything about. For example, many people experience insomnia because our bodies are over-producing stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. When these hormones fail to shut off at night, it may be difficult to either fall asleep or stay asleep.
Cortisol Imbalances
Studies have shown that excessive amounts of cortisol and adrenaline inhibit REM or “rapid eye movement” sleep essential for restorative sleep. Most common prescription sleep medications help patients fall asleep but don’t address the underlying problem.
Specialized Saliva Test
At the Ash Center, we use a highly sensitive saliva test that more accurately measures free cortisol and DHEA levels. In my clinical experience, this is a far superior method of assessing stress hormones and adrenal function than traditional blood tests.
